The Faculty & Staff Assistance Office maintains complete confidentiality with the following exceptions:? Suspected child or elder abuse or neglect will be reported to the appropriate agency; confidentiality is suspended when there is a clear threat against an identified victim, including self; confidentiality can also be suspended when someone signs a “Release of Information.”

Our office maintains the highest of ethical standards in compliance with the National Association of Social Work, the American Psychological Association and HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of privacy regulations.


The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAO) is a resource where you or your family can find help during your career working at Boston University. We provide free and confidential support, problem solving or coaching to address your work or personal challenges.

We recognize that the people who work in our community have personal lives outside the workplace. Finding success and happiness in both areas is important to your well-being. We offer consultation, brief counseling and, if potentially beneficial, referral to community resources for a wide range of work or personal challenges.

We also can assist you in thinking about your career at Boston University. If you are thinking about advancing or changing your career or are discouraged at your lack of progress, we can help you assess your skills and interests, consider how to expand your skills and how to overcome roadblocks to enhance your professional success. We can also refer you to a career counselor for specific strategies like resume preparation, job search and market analysis.

As part of the university’s wellness efforts, we also offer a variety of programs to enhance your well-being and resilience. ?We can provide customized programs for you and your colleagues on mindfulness, well-being and resilience.
